From Geohashing

I have unilaterally decided that this will be a "most recent first" list as opposed to an "add it at whichever end seems most convenient" list.

Easy waterhash in Beaver lake, Wijnland would like to make this a saturday meetup hash. I will bring my canoe (it is red) and be ready at 1500 at hamsterly beach. it is quite close to shore so we could even swim...

2011-11-27 48 -123

I Wijnland will attempt this hash on Saltspring island. Anyone interested in joining me...

2011-08-03 48 -123

Anyone still in the area? This is up in Saanich. Noticed it a bit late, but... - Wmcduff 21:06, 3 August 2011 (EDT)

Golf Geohash up for grabs! Today's Geohash coordinates lie halfway up the 3rd hole at the Cordova Bay Golf course. I'll make a go of it after work. --Wenslayer 16:22, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Success! --Wenslayer 05:13, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

2010-07-29

More good luck this month! Yet another accessible Geohash today, this time practically on Quail's Run (a road off Bear Mountain Parkway). I'll give it a go after work today. --Wenslayer 15:25, 29 July 2010 (UTC)

Success, write-up available. --Wenslayer 07:05, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

2010-07-24

This day's Geohash is in the middle of Saanich Inlet, so while this may seem inaccessible, I say "Water-Geohash!". I plan on renting a kayak in Brentwood Bay and paddling out to the spot (maybe I'll take my 9-year old with me as well). Any other takers? --Wenslayer 22:02, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Success! Write-up complete. --Wenslayer 17:29, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

2010-07-18

Anybody up for this one? It's right off Mt. Newton Cross Road near Saanichton -- looks like it's in a farmer's field. Looks pretty easy, so I'll probably go for it. --Wenslayer 00:04, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

My 6-year old daughter accompanied me and we reached the coordinates after asking permission to enter from the land-owner; will write up shortly. --Wenslayer 03:51, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
Write-up complete, heading "linkified". --Wenslayer 18:24, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Looks like this one's just off the Malahat. Looking at the Google Street View, it looks like it's a no-trespassing area. I'm going to be riding by there, so I'll make an attempt. --Wenslayer 00:04, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Came within 81m, thwarted by the no-trespassing sign. Will write up shortly. --Wenslayer 19:25, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
Write-up complete, heading "linkified". --Wenslayer 18:24, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

2010-06-06

Hooray, the Geohash coordinates for today actually fall in Victoria proper. I have no excuse not to make it. --Wenslayer 16:13, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

Update: Geohash coordinates were reached; following heading link for expedition write-up. --Wenslayer 00:04, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

2010-04-01

After a long hiatus from Geohashing (I still have to write up my last one!), I'll be biking to this one after work. Funny, but it's kind of like a reverse April Fool's joke: the Geohash is actually achievable today ;-). --Wenslayer 18:04, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Update: Geohash coordinates were reached; following heading link for expedition write-up. --Wenslayer 15:28, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

2009-08-08 Victoria Saturday Meetup

Wow! An accessible Geohash within Victoria! For Saturday, this location is quite close to Butchart Gardens, so I totally plan on being there -- would be great to meet other Geohashers if you can make it. See the Meetup page I created (click the link above). --Wenslayer 16:22, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

2009-07-05 in Courtenay

Any islanders interested in Courtenay?

2009-06-30

Great, I'm on vacation (up in Whistler), and today's Geohash is practically downtown. Looks like it's smack in the middle of the Trans-Canada just as it leaves Victoria, right before the Helmcken Road exit. In fact, it looks like it lies in the grassy part between both directions of the highway. Should be easy to make it, would just have to do a little highway jay-walking. I'm sure it might even be accessible from the fast lane within a GPS device's margin of error. Good luck to any of you going to try this. --Wenslayer 14:59, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

2009-06-24

Argh, on a rare day the Geohash appears with the Capital Regional District, today it is on the grounds of CFB Esquimalt's CFAD Rocky Point (ammunition depot), and the point itself looks like it lands right on top of an ammunition bunker! It's highly unlikely to get close to this, unless you work there and have restricted access. --Wenslayer 18:29, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

2009-06-22

I'm going to try for this one -- looks like it's either right on the shore, or in the water off somebody's property on one of the Indian reservations. --Wenslayer 17:23, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

So close (8m), will write it up. --Wenslayer 04:41, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

2009-06-19,20,21

Argh, this weekend's three Geohashes are all too far flung to practically reach in half a day. Can I pick which latitude and longitude out of the three days and create my own? For example, how about this one?

I really don't expect this to be endorsed :-) --Wenslayer 14:29, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Spend the weekend doing something that you'll have to do later, so that another weekend you can spend the whole day/weekend geohashing, and not feel guilty. Clean the garage, weed the garden. Or plan and build a contraption to get you to the next geohash. -Robyn 21:56, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Good advice, Robyn! :-) --Wenslayer 22:01, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

2009-06-13

Anybody up for this Geohash? Looks like it's just off William Head Road in Metchosin quite close to the water, although it's likely on someone's property. I'm planning on biking there in the morning, but with no GPS device, I won't be able to nail it down. --Wenslayer 16:08, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Wish I could join you, but I have to work tomorrow. Good luck! - Elbie 16:19, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Upon closer inspection, I believe this Geohash lies on the inside of the William Head Institution (minimum security facility)! Is there a jail-break achievement??? :-) Now I have to go check it out tomorrow and take some pictures of a no-tresspassing sign at least. --Wenslayer 16:32, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

I created the meetup page, currently in planning mode.

Updated with results of expedition. --Wenslayer 23:16, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Hash on Salt Spring

Would anybody else be interested in joining me for 2009-05-03 48 -123? -Elbie 19:23, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm going to be overnight at 2009-05-02 48 -122 and can't make the ferry in time to join you. I'll go to 2009-05-03 48 -122 instead. Also I have a moratorium on spending money on ferry tolls for non-Saturday geohashes right now. -Robyn 19:28, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

2009-04-25

I'm gonna try this one. (Page: 2009-04-25 48 -123.) Anybody else interested? Elbie 01:49, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

2008-08-16

I'm going to get as close as I can. If anyone is going to be in the area; I'll be on the side of the highway (the part that look as if it will look out over the water) at 15:30. Thepiguy 05:43, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Have you guys nailed any geohashes yet, or will I break your graticule's virginity if I get to Point Roberts today?

Nice page maintenance, Wenslayer. Sorry if we occasional cross-Strait claim jumpers made a mess of it; the Victoria page looks good now. -Robyn 03:22, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
