XKCD-MIME

#xkcd-mime sparked off after a discussion between Debaser and brilliantnut on #xkcd-rhyme as an antithesis for #xkcd-rhyme. The philosophy of this channel is that Actions speak louder than words.

[edit] What do you mean, actions, not words?

Yes, we realize that this is IRC[citation needed], and actions are words as well. But even the newest kid on the block will know that ACTIONS in IRC are basically things that start with /me. If you need it spelled out for you: In this channel, you can only say stuff starting with /me, otherwise you get muted.

[edit] Wait, you have a bot in here already?

Of course! Say hello to Mimer! This is #xkcd-mime, not just #mime, what did you expect? In jercos's words: the point is to limit ourselves to imaginary boundries, then quantify these boundries and create bots that force us to stay inside them, then slowly shorten the box we've put ourselves in.

[edit] Um, so what does this bot do?

Mimer, written by yzal in python, works like this:

  • when you join he gives you voice (if you're not already muted, more on this later on).
  • if you talk in action, all is fine and rosy.
  • if you talk with regular say (not action), the bot unvoices you (mutes you) for a certain amount of time (lets call this mute time).
  • after mute time passes, you get your voice back.
  • if you misbehave again, it doubles your current mute time and devoices you again.
  • every 5 minutes, your mute time gets lower by 10 seconds.
  • if you are muted, rejoining a chan wont help(no cheating)
  • if you are muted and someone else gives you voice, the bot devoices you(remember, no cheating)

Mimer, the current bot, written by jercos in perl, works like this:

  • when you join he gives you voice (if you're not already muted, more on this later on).
  • if you talk in action, all is fine and rosy.
  • if you talk with regular say (not action), the bot unvoices you (mutes you) for a certain amount of time (lets call this mute time).
  • after mute time passes, you get your voice back.
  • if you misbehave again, your current mute time increases by half again (time 1.5 in other words)
  • every 10 minutes, your mute time gets lower by 10 seconds.
  • if you are muted, rejoining a chan wont help(no cheating)

[edit] Ok, but what is the point?

Mostly just fun. Also see jercos's words above. Then read this. Then read Asimov's Second Foundation, if you haven't read it already. So, this might even be an experiment in evolving into a Second Foundation like race. YMMV.
