From Geohashing

Since pretty much ever edit to a talk page consists of adding a comment, and as some people subscribe to the updates such that they read the summaries, consider making our lives more interesting by summarizing your comment, e.g. "my mom approves" or "I like it too." -Robyn 17:29, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Robyn - being new to this I appreciate the advice, and I see your point (which I hope is evident from my summary) :) --macronencer 18:42, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Woo! I love your goals. I made a sign once out of seasnails. They started walking away while I was trying to photograph them. I realized afterwards that I should have taken a series of photos of them leaving and then run it backwards so it looks like the were congregating to make the sign. -Robyn 22:33, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
That's very good! Of course, it needs to be done with ducklings at some point, too. By the way, I've been looking at your page, and also the page of Reinhard and getting a lot of ideas for mine. One thing I love about wikis is that you can edit to see the source and work out how things are done. I've been able to learn much quicker by doing that. I enjoyed reading your recent hash with the bramble patch - must have been great fun! Like you, I hope to get fit doing this, but I need some proper equipment. I do have a reasonable bike and my own car, which is a good start! --macronencer 23:18, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Hey have you seen we've been linked on the Meetup_graph! :) sermoa 21:13, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Hey, great! I didn't know that existed. :) --macronencer 22:14, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

lol - nullaturion achievement!! well done! :) sermoa 16:37, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Hey, yes, it was unfortunate, however we both found it extreamly amusing! Add me on facebook http://www.facebook.com/matthewhouse. Shall see you again soon! 04housemat 19:13, 02 August 2009 (UTC)

i love your new little hashcot! :) have you got your shiny gps device yet? --sermoa 20:31, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

No, but it's on its way by the end of the week! Chuck was previously guarding my bookshelf but he wanted to see the world ;) --macronencer 21:33, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

iPhone GPS info

I'm looking for a simple GPS info app for the iPhone - if you know of one then please let me know, otherwise I can let you know if I find one. PhilHibbs 16:45, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Phil - Well I'm using Motion-X GPS which is pretty cheap in the iTunes store (1.79GBP). It's not exactly "simple" but it has simple modes where you just get a GPS readout, if that's all you need. In addition it handles waypoints, tracks (which can be shared by email, Facebook etc.) and a GPS compass if you haven't got the 3GS :) HTH --macronencer 18:25, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Place Names

One thing that I find amusing when I read about your expeditions is that we have so many of those place names in Massachusetts. I guess whoever named places here had very little imagination. We have Chelmsford, Brighton, Southampton (I think I drove though Southampton today), Weymouth, Charlton, and probably also others of the places you have geohashed. (So far I haven't geohashed in any of those towns, though.) If the Tale of Two Hashes ever becomes an official achievement, we will be able to claim each other's challenges.

Oh yes! I'd read about that achievement a week or two ago, but not in proper detail. You just prompted me to go and have another look. I think you are right: if it becomes official, there will be lots of opportunities for translatlantic co-operation, given our histories - probably especially in your area. They don't call it "New England" for nothing! ;) --macronencer 08:08, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

How old is your son? I bet he'll like geohashing when you get a chance to take him with you. My son is very much looking forward to the Buccaneer Achievement Sara 01:21, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

He will be 7 in November. I'm looking forward to doing a hash with him - perhaps it will be in August as I have a week's leave from work to spend with him and the weather might be nice. Buccaneer achievement sounds like a great idea for him, LOL! I must remember to do that at some point. --macronencer 08:07, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
My daughter will be 7 in September. She's learning how to use the GPS, and starting to read a map to direct me to places in the car. She enjoyed the attempt at a water geohash. Sara 01:34, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
The map-reading thing is a great idea! My parents used to do that when I was young. We would all get in the car to go on holiday somewhere and we children would take it in turns to navigate. I think it gave us all a great deal of appreciation of geography, symbology and geometry, and helped us to notice the beautiful features of the landscape. Thanks for the reminder! I really must start getting my son to do it too: he spends a little too much time on his Nintendo at the moment :| --macronencer 06:56, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Ambassador reference sheet

have you seen this?

ambassador reference sheet

- not that you needed it to enter the field the other day. personally i think that help sheet is too detailed. our own GEOHASHING explained sheet is probably a more appropriate level of complexity. --sermoa 12:13, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I have five of these printed out and I always take them on hashes. You're right that it's often too much detail - but I think the original design was intended for use in more formal circumstances - for example, contacting a school or organisation on the Friday for permission to enter for a Saturday hash. In those cases, leaving a formal printout would give them something to wield in a legal sense if any damage should occur, and so might make them more accommodating. P.S. I also have five of our Google Doc printed out :) --macronencer 12:45, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Geohashing Icons

I was just taking a close look at your Geohashing table and how awesome it is! All those little icons look great together! I also like how you numbered your geohashes using 3 digits :D Thepiguy 09:39, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Thank you! It has taken a lot of fiddling to get to this point :) I was initially inspired by Reinhard with his little coloured arrows and his score card in grid format, but I'm one of those people who is never happy and constantly fiddling! The icons are almost how I want them, but I couldn't find good ones for cycling and walking so those are made by me (and it shows!) Looking forward to meeting you (two weeks to go!) P.S. Thanks to Sermoa for fixing the text wrap! --macronencer 17:11, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

Am I still alive?

Yes. :) Just not doing a lot right now. Still checking the hashes every day though. Don't want to miss anything unusual! --macronencer 19:23, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

As long as you're still alive, don't forget to send me your shipping information for the Geohashing Calendars! Thepiguy 19:30, 4 December 2009 (UTC)

Geohashing Day Invitation

Am I still alive? (Teil Zwei)

Yes. Again. I've just discovered the Dark Ages and the whole moving-of-the-wiki thing, and I've signed up with my old username. Hoping to do some expeditions at some point, but I'm sure my Wiki Skills will be lacking for a while so please give me a break. It's been a long time. Special thanks to DanQ for resuscitating this site! I'm very grateful that I have the option of continuing my adventures online. -- Macronencer (talk) 12:14, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

Shame about the solar farm -- but if it's in your graticule, the chance may yet arise! Arlo (talk) 15:39, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! Yes, it's actually in Bristol grat which is NW of me. There are a few solar farms and wind farms around though, including at least on solar farm I know of in my own graticule. Maybe I should research in advance to see who to contact... --Macronencer (talk)
