From Geohashing

Graticule name

Why does it have to be the Graticule Name? Your example (which is my pic) is wrong then, it should be Rheine, not Ochtrup (I also wrongly named the 52 7 graticule after the main river, Ems). The problem I have with graticule names is, cities are often at the edge, or in a corner. When the hash is not even near that place, it seems wrong to me to name a hash after that city. I use the nearest city/town/village, which in this particular case was also weird, because the hash was sort-of in the _middle_ of nowhere between multiple towns.

Also, the all-graticule page is very outdated. 52 7 is not even in it.--Arvid 15:38, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

All Graticules is not automatically generated. If your graticule is not covered, you are welcome to add it. In the past, the standard for galleries had been to list the graticule name for ease of recognition. However, looking at recent entries, I see the paradigm has shifted a bit during the last few weeks. My apologies. I will correct the instructions. --Tim P 15:49, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

4 picture limit

Expedition pages that are linked at the gallery appear to get significantly more views than such which are not linked. That wasn't any problem during winter, when the limit was never exceeded anyway, but...

  • this was only because some participants don't add their pictures,
  • geohashing is growing again
  • just recently it happened that pictures couldn't be added because of the limit
  • the great expeditions tend to have their report finished later (if only because you don't return from them at afternoon UTC), so...
  • if the limit is exceeded it will prefer the short and easy expeditions

I don't know whether it is possible to have some kind of automatic rotation for days where the limit is exceeded. Otherwise I think the limit should be raised significantly or dropped at all, or, at the very least, be encouraged that the rest of expedition pages are added as a textual link to the template to make them visible. I understand that the limit was introduced to avoid that the main page gets seriously clogged, but if that means that expedition reports get hidden and not read, I don't feel comfortable with that. --Ekorren 19:03, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

I tend to read the Recent Changes page and completely ignore the main page, so I probably see most of them anyway, but I wonder how much the main page is actually being 'clogged up' by more than four photos per day? I've just had a quick look in the daily expedition categories: the first 14 days of May have had 3, 10 (Saturday), 10 (Sunday), 1, 1, 1, 4, 6, 5 (Sat), 6 (Sun), 4, 2, 7, 2. So if there was a photo added for each expedition, there'd be, what, an extra seven photos added to the gallery, or about one extra photo every two days. I think we can cope with that, so I would support removal of the four-photo limit. Why don't we try it, at least? We can always reinstate the limit if it gets unwieldy. -- Benjw 20:48, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
As long as the convention of one photo per expedition is respected, I don't think that it would be a problem to remove the limit. If geohashing does get so popular that even that becomes unwieldy, we will have to work out a way to select which expeditions are featured (or a rotation as mentioned earlier), but until then, I support removing the limit. -- Rhonda 21:12, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

I think that the gallery should be used as a quick guide to what hashing for that day entailed. If people follow the one picture limit, then we won't have a problem for the time being. I support a removal of the limit. Also, I think that if we ever do add a limit, that people should still be able to add beyond that limit, and leave it up to the community to decide which ones stay and which ones go. As was previously stated, some of the more interesting expeditions are added the day after it occurred. If any limit is added, it should also be able to be overridden by the community, in the case that we happen to have a bunch of awesome expeditions on the same day. --aperfectring 22:21, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Using Template:Gallery

I would like to propose Template:Gallery instead of the gallery tag on the main page. One advantage of Template:Gallery is that it automatically adapts to different screen sizes. Other than than, it should not show significant visual differences to the current layout, as you can see on this day page where I tested it. The change seems to have gone unnoticed. Please express your support or voice your objections. -- relet 17:50, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

support - a difference that I won't see as different but that will have technical advantages seems like a no-brainer. -Robyn 22:13, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
concur - I can't tell the difference! -- pi

[x] I replaced the sample code. It might require some tweaking. -- relet 13:37, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Extending Gallery

While we're arguing about stuff...

Can we extend the gallery to include more days? The pictures shuffle off the end so quickly. No to mention that after all the stress associated with the Geohashing itself (finding your way down a mountain in the dark, almost drowning while trying to paddle back to shore in a rubber raft, etc.) you have to regain your strength and write an awesome report in only a few days. -- [[user:thepiguy]] 01:28, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

It's true. Half the time our expeditions never get on the front page, because we haven't finished writing before they scroll off. -Robyn 04:25, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
I concur. What we could maybe try to do is to obtain a more compact format. I was thinking of vertical "day" bars separating the pictures, allowing the whole gallery to extend and shrink according to activity, and only line wrapping as needed. Something like the gallery below:
Then there is more room for more days as well. -- relet 13:09, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
Is there any way for the date to be kept with the first picture? --aperfectring 17:13, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I am very much in favor of more days on the front page. Do we want more days on the Geohashing:Current events page as well? --aperfectring 17:15, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Please play around with the following gallery and see if it works for you: The looks, the wrapping when you resize the window, and usage. Feel free to add entries. Everything called User:relet/Test* will of course receive a shorter, more speaking name when deployed. -- relet 11:17, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Recent Expeditions

A couple of comments:

  1. I like the idea a whole lot, and hope that we can get this, or something similar, up and running soon!
  2. If there is a way to link the date to the first image for that date, it would look a lot better than having the date at the end of a line, and the first pictures starting on the next line. Maybe block the whole day's worth of pictures together, so that if a line would wrap, it starts on a new line? I'm not sure here, the whole wrapping thing, as it stands, seems a little strange to me.
  3. The dates seem strange while they are "vertical" The month word will make some dates much wider than others. Could we use the geohashing standard YYYY-MM-DD format all vertically, or would that be too tall/make the pictures too big?
  4. The landscape (horizontal) photos are typically the most common on the front page, yet this gallery makes them smaller. Could we expand the width of the image display boxes so that landscape photos fill most of the frame?

--aperfectring 15:15, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Re 2) I have bundled all images for a day together now for wrapping. We can see if the varying row lenghts look ok. 3) It uses three-letter month names now, and a larger font for the day. 4) The images are now restricted to 175 hor and 130 ver, which is roughly 4:3 format. -- relet 15:42, 5 June 2010 (UTC)
