From Geohashing

Original (Pre-Coordinate) Plans

As last year: meet in #geohashing at hash-o-clock and figure them out!

A multi-day hash would be awesome, since both geohashing day and mouse over day co-ordinates will be announced at the same time. It'll also make some points more accessible as we won't have to get there and back on the same day (except for those who work Saturday).

Totally up for a camping hash and then attempting the second hash on first light. --Yangman 17:09, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
I'm totally up for the consecutive hash. -Robyn 17:14, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

If cars are required, I have a 5-seatbelt geohashmobile which is equally at home on logging roads and pavement. -Rhonda

Does this mean I'm going to have to pre-pack again? I'll make sure to have the snowshoes and the inflatable-raft ready... Hmmm... I wonder how often those two words get used in the same sentence? -- [[user:thepiguy]] 07:12, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Alternate

We should have an alternate all ready to go. My suggestion is "the best hash we missed this year." There must have been one somewhere that you looked at and said "if only it wasn't Wednesday/5 p.m./raining/freezing/laundry day/the day before my thesis defence" and regretted not getting to. We could go retrohash it.

I was just thinking of alternates today. There's the inaugural-day point, which we held as an alternate last year but didn't visit, on a beach on Gabriola Island.
On the 10th there was one in the tantalus range, halfway to lake lovely water, which is a provincial park campground... with cabins and everything. There's also the garibaldi expedition you planned then didn't do. -- Rhonda 02:20, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Of those two, the Garibaldi would be my preference. The Tantalus is on a very steep slope and of course all Tantalus range hashes require fording a difficult river. There's also the New Otherton hash on Anvil Island, but not everyone has a boat. -Robyn 02:41, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
True enough; I want to get one in the Tantalus one day, but geohashing day may not be the best time to go for it :-) I would support Gabriola Island as an alternate, or Garibaldi if there is consensus that a cool retro that wasn't a geohashing day point will be appropriate. Gabriola Island has the benefit that there's more likely to be people we can try to share cake with, but the disadvantage that it requires two ferry rides to get to. -- Rhonda 04:58, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
There are a few of us who still have to work on Geohashing day, but would like to do an after-work meet. Two ferries (or a long drive and a long hike) does sort of require one to commit the entire day. --Wade 05:10, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Gabriola could be reached before midnight, starting after work. 7pm ferry from horseshoe bay arrives in Nanaimo 8:35; 9:55 ferry arrives on Gabriola island 10:15. (I don't think we'd make the 8:55 sailing.) Garibaldi would make a good Saturday alternate because we'd have all day to get there, if people want a hike. -- Rhonda 13:50, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

Preparations

As thepiguy mentions below, some advance preparation is in order. Last year's Talk:2009-05-21_48_-123 pretty much covers it, but someone should update the ferry times.

While I did post a ferry schedule that would work for getting to Gabriola Island, we should keep in mind that this year, Geohashing Day is the Friday before May long weekend and as such everybody will be going every which way, immediately after work, and rush hour can start as early as noon. If Gabriola is the choice for Friday and we are bringing a car, whoever is driving will have to watch the ferry status and get there early to target the 7PM sailing. 2-sailing waits are not uncommon on this sort of Friday. The rest of the group can buy walk-on tickets closer to the sailing time and join the car at that point, if they can't get away early enough to ride to the terminal in the car. -- Rhonda 14:43, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Comments

BTW, great page, love the cake. :-)

Does anybody have time to make a cake for this year? Unfortunately, I don't. -- Rhonda 00:56, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
I'll make a cake right now. -Robyn 02:45, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Everyone will be pleased to know that cake has been made and it is asparagus-free. The icing is very good, too. --Wade 05:55, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
The goodness of the icing is with reference to taste, not artistry. Just because you have a piping bag with six different icing tips doesn't mean that you can produce a work of art. -Robyn 05:58, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Hooray! cake! My decorating job last year wasn't exactly artistry either. I was satisfied with getting the lettering mostly straight, and the stick figures recognizable as the geohashing logo. -- Rhonda 06:27, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
