From Geohashing

Making a plan

When were you planning to do this in your car? May I join you? My current plan is to bus as close as possible, and then do some mild amounts of trespassing on farmers' lands, but driving by it in a car may be simpler. Elbie 17:19, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Ack, I thought this was 49 -123 -- disregard.

Okay, this works out great.

  • If the bike fits in the geohash mobile with yours, then I can meet you in Richmond, somewhere on No.5 Road and I don't need to worry about catching the shuttle.
  • If there aren't room for that many bikes then you can unload Elbie and the other bikes at the Town and Country, leave her to guard them there, come back for me at No.5 and Rice Mills Road, then leave my bike at Town and Country, we all go to the Surrey hash, then come back to swap bikes. I ride to the ferry, we reconvene at the ferry terminal, take bikes across, and so on.
  • But they'll all fit in the van, won't they? Where should I meet you? -Robyn 17:50, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

I was planning on bringing my bike along for the purposes of getting home after this hash. That makes three bikes and three people to fit in a van -- think we can do it? I'll be bringing my tools with me, so I can take off my front wheel, no problem. Elbie 17:55, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Both my wheels are quick-release, but I have fenders. Do the seats fold down or come out? It would be a piee of cake to have you and pi in the front seats, me in the back and bikes with front wheels removed in the middle, with the middle seat removed. And there's the roof. I even have a bike rack designed for a car hatchback, but possibly usable on the back of the van. Are you coming to the island, too? If not, can your bike be left at thepiguy's place? -Robyn 18:26, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
I'm not planning on coming to the island, and since I'll need it on the way back, I don't think leaving it at thepiguy's place will work. As for fitting the bikes in the van, I think I remember him saying that the middle seats can come out. So that could work. Also, I'll have a trisocket on me, so your fenders could conceivably be removed and then later put back on. Elbie 19:02, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

So are you driving the van home after we do the Surrey hash? Correct this, please:

*Pi picks up Elbie and her bike at UBC

  • Pi and Elbie drive to 41st and Knight (or 70th and Granville or ?) and pick up Robyn and her bike
  • Pi, Elbie and Robyn drive through tunnel to Surrey hash
  • Pi, Elbie and Robyn drive to Tsawwassen ferry terminal
  • Pi and Robyn and their bikes get out and go on the ferry
  • Elbie drives to Pi's place, leaves van
  • Elbie takes out her bike and bikes home

or is it:

  • Pi picks up Elbie and her bike at UBC
  • Pi and Elbie drive to 41st and Knight (or 70th and Granville or ?) and pick up Robyn and her bike
  • Pi, Elbie and Robyn drive through tunnel to Surrey hash then park at Delta Town and Country
  • Pi, Robyn and Elbie drive back through tunnel, drop off Elbie and her bike
  • Pi and Robyn drive to the ferry
  • Elbie bikes home
  • Pi and Robyn park van in day parking, take bikes on ferry

See updated plan below'.'

I do not have a driver's license, so it will have to be the latter option (or a variety thereof). Elbie 19:22, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Yay, a plan!

Okay, then lets refine it to ...

  • Pi picks up Elbie at UBC (7:30 in Formal Attire!)
  • Pi and Elbie drive to 41st and Knight and pick up Robyn (7:50)
  • Pi, Elbie and Robyn drive through tunnel to Surrey hash
  • Pi takes King George Highway exit northbound, heads west on highway 10
  • Pi drops off Robyn and her bike at Ladner Trunk Road (Highway 10) and Highway 17 (or she could stay in the van and go for a ride!)
  • Robyn rides towards ferry
  • Pi takes Elbie back to UBC
  • Pi drives to ferry
  • Pi and Robyn park van in Tsawwassen day parking, take bikes on ferry

If the three bikes in van thing doesn't work, Robyn can either take the shuttle as originally planned or he take his and Elbie's bikes through the tunnel and then meet Robyn at the west side of the tunnel and shuttle her bike through. -Robyn 19:38, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

This works for me. Being entirely clueless about Richmond bike routes, would it be fine to drop me off at the beginning of SW Marine Drive in Vancouver? It's a pretty straightforward ride home from there for me. Elbie 20:17, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
The rest is up to Pi. I will check this space this evening to see where I am supposed to be when tomorrow morning. If there is nothing, I will revert to the original plan, hoping to see you at the ferry. -Robyn 20:47, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

I leave the internet for 1 day to go do something stupid like study, and look what happens! :p

I updated the plan above and added some times. I don't think we could fit three people and three bikes in the van, so I'm just going to drop Elbie back at UBC. Assuming nothing goes terribly wrong, this should get thepiguy and Robyn on the 11:00 ferry to Duke point. We can figure out how to get back later. Thepiguy 03:10, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

I will see you at 07:50 tomorrow at the Shell gas station at 41st and Knight. -Robyn 03:21, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

WAIT! There's no 11 am ferry. There's only a 10:15 and a 12:45. And Xore wants to join the Surrey meetup walking from transit. Xore responds to e-mail, perhaps we can work it out in the morning. -Robyn 05:23, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Have we heard back from him? Am I just postponing the trip by an hour? Thepiguy 06:28, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

I should be up at 6:30. Let me know what's goin' on. See you tomorrow! Thepiguy 07:31, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Will try to be there for 8:30 or 9:00. See you if you're still there Xore 14:08, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Speed-picnic plans

Sweet, I will see you early tomorrow morning, in an evening gown. I'll bring along some fancy wine and cheese to amplify the lovely juxtaposition we'll have going on with the side of the highway. Robyn -- do you drink white wine? Right now I'm only planning to bring some for me, since I know thepiguy doesn't drink (and is also driving.) I have viognier and gewürztraminer on hand right now; do you have a preference? Elbie 03:33, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
Oh vengeful geohashing gods; please don't let this turn into a police geohash! (Try explaining that!) Thepiguy 03:36, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
Don't worry, we won't be there long enough for our probability of a police encounter to be high (and if it is, we'll see them coming.) Also, for faster eating, I'll just bring along some crackers, pre-sliced swiss, and a container of cream cheese that we can dip the crackers into. Elbie 03:48, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
I'l bring fancy toothpicks. We can prepare the hors d'oevres en route, n'est-ce pas? -Robyn 03:58, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, then, if we'll have fancy toothpicks, I may have to make some rockin' cambozola & avocado sandwiches that shall call for skewering. Elbie 04:04, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
Oh and I don't drink wine either, but I'll see if I can find a carafe to carry some grape juice. -Robyn 04:09, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
"Sewering" sandwiches, in formal attire? Perhaps I should wait until after dinner to read the expedition report. oh. --NullHypothesis 19:37, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

I've packed three wine glasses for tomorrow, so you'll have something nice to drink the grape juice out of. Elbie 04:30, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Comments

You had to be rescued?! -- Rhonda 19:15, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Congratulations, this expedition made me laugh more than any other. I especially like the photo of Robyn in lady's gloves holding T-Rex and a GPS, with the van in the ditch in the background. Perfect! Juventas 05:38, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Just wait until you see the pit I dug with my front tire. I'll put up some pictures soon. Thepiguy 05:57, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

If you ever do an off-road geohash up here, let me do the driving. :) Don't feel bad, you'd have to baby me if we were to cycle together. Juventas 09:17, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Who has a good picture of me in formal attire for my ribbon image? -Robyn 06:20, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

I'll start putting my pictures up soon. I'll make sure to post you playing charades! Thepiguy 18:53, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't think any of them will be as marvelous as Pi setting up his camera. Juventas 09:17, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
I look like Spiderman! Thepiguy 18:53, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
