This graticule is at latitude 49, longitude 8 and is one of Germany's most active. It contains the Rhein-Neckar-Triangle, a densely populated region around Mannheim and Heidelberg. Mannheim is not only the graticule's largest city (it's the second-largest city in Baden-Württemberg after the capital Stuttgart), it is also located in the exact center of this graticule.

It includes the southern half of Mainz (the capital of Rheinland-Pfalz) as well as the northern portion of Karlsruhe. It contains large parts of the Odenwald in the east and a little part of the Palatinate Forest in the west.

Length of the graticule: 111 km; average width: 1.852 km * 60 * cos 49.5° = 72.17 km; area = 8011 km²

Statistically, once every three years a hashpoint hits France in the most southwestern part (7.488 km² = 0.93 %) of the graticule. Since the beginning of geohashing in 2008, this has not happened yet.

• 2009-11-14: In the middle of the Ettlinger Tor shopping centre in Karlsruhe. A total of eight people went there and met - ilpadre, Fluxkompensator, Koepfel, Mo6eB and friends.
