In the Northwest U.S., where there are a lot of them, we call them "slugs" if they don't have shells (snails only if they do have shells). I don't know whether it's a regional word or a general English word!

Looked it up in the dictionary and you're right; slug is the homeless snail :-) Thanks for helping me learn new English words.--Fasanen 08:46, 21 July 2011 (EDT)
