Travelling from Townsville to Darwin, unrelatedly on Valentine's Day, I stopped off in Cairns for a couple of hours. While sitting vacantly in the airport, I discovered that the geohash of that day was also located at the airport. Unfortunately, it was a few hundred metres away just off to one side of the runway. Thinking for a moment that it might be possible to climb a few fences and run towards it before being grab-tackled by Airport security, I pretty quickly realised I could not reach this locale.
Instead I waited patiently for my flight to depart and then held my phone to the window to see if I'd by flying over the point. I suspected the plane would bank left as it departed, so there was a slim chance I could get there. Sadly, the plane spent too much time on the runway and didn't lift-off and bank fast enough. The below screen-shot of the Geohash Droid shows I got as close as 220m, but no closer.
- Update from the future! This geohash might actually qualify as a success. I was within 220m when the plane lifted its wheels off the tarmac, which would allow it to use the 310m Air Geohash standards of success, as described in the discussion to the achievement page: Talk:Air_geohash_achievement.
- There is a lot of disagreement over whether this standard for success is valid though, and I disagree with it, so I'm leaving it as a fail. If I ever become permanently bed-bound at 255 successful geohashes though I'll go back and claim it to get the 2^8 achievement!

Hardly a proper consolation prize, but I guess I was thwarted by my plane failing to fly directly over the hash...
