Plans

Shane and Bryn planned to cycle to the meeting point using a route to allow the Tron Hash achievement: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/97728499 This involves doing a lap of Arthur's Seat.

Expedition

It was a grey day in Edinburgh despite recent sunshine. So this was an excellent excuse to get out. We followed the planned route, making sure to turn the right way at the gate. We went through the Meadows and on in to the Royal Park. As we turned up past Meadowbank Stadium, we congratulated ourselves for being on a one-way street going the right way!

But with only a few hundred metres to go, we overshot the narrow pend (cut-through) which would have taken us to just the right spot. We kept going and instead turned in to the next one. Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do!

We approached the location with caution and Shane staring at geohashdroid. Bryn just managed to save him from collecting a souvenir left by a recent canine geohasher.

So now we just had to get home. It's at a time like this that you wish you'd actually brought the map. We hoped that three rights would make a left. A mistaken detour up a small crescent looked like it might spell disaster. As we turned again towards the roundabout, we "knew" we'd bump in to our own glowing trails. But when we reached the roundabout, it didn't seem to be the same one. Later map work revealed we were saved by the fifth road. Another navigational slip took us back to another roundabout we recognised, but this time we weren't in danger of crossing our paths.

This is the route we actually took: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/97774939

We turned left and completed our circumnavigation of Meadowbank Stadium, followed by the climb around the back of Arthurs Seat. The back road is steeper and higher, but much quieter. We were rewarded with views of the mist on the summit, and over the land to the South and East. Views like this remind me why I like living in Edinburgh.

From here we were in no danger of messing up our route, and followed our noses to the front gate.
